Into the badlands ...

Horseshoe Canyon

When Mum and I returned from our road trip, there was no rest of the wicked.  After one lazy day at home, we headed out for another adventure, this time heading east from Calgary (we also took C with us).  Our destination was the curiously named 'badlands.'  Apparently they are called the badlands because that is what the pioneers thought of them ... bad land for farming.  And you can see why.  It was so hot and sticky while we were there, the creek bed was totally dry, there was not a breath of wind and it was incredibly difficult to find a slither of shade in which to escape from the heat.  The area of the badlands that we visited was Horseshoe Canyon (can you guess what shape the canyon was?) and we spent an hour or so wandering along the bottom of the canyon admiring the rock formations and the wide blue sky before the heat got the better of us.  Our second stop was the Hoodoos (soft rock eroded away with a hard piece of rock on top), a destination that was far more touristy than Horseshoe Canyon, but still incredibly interesting to see.  Thankfully steps have been put in place to protect the delicate structures and stop people climbing on them, which erodes them further.  The day trip out to the badlands was well worth it and I look forward to heading out there again on a slightly cooler day!

Interesting layering in the rocks

Mum was particularly thrilled with the name 'Badlands'!
