After our time in Montana, our next big destination was Osoyoos in British Columbia, just north of the US border. To get there, we needed to drive across the top of three US states - Montana, Idaho and Washington. It was a stunning drive, with beautiful lakes around every bend. The 4-5 hour drive on each day (it took two days to get there) took 8-9 hours since we wanted to stop and explore so many different places. Because the drive was quite long, we chose to break it up by staying overnight in Sandpoint, Idaho. It turned out that we easily could have stayed a little longer. Our hotel was right on the lake, with lovely views and some pleasant walking paths around the water's edge. The town itself was a little unimpressive, with nearly half the buildings in the main downtown area up for lease. Business is clearly not booming in Sandpoint. The second day of driving was another one of meandering and involved some risk taking when we took a back road across a very scenic pass instead of sticking to the main highway. The risk paid off as the drive, the views and the places we discovered were quite lovely. Before heading across the border back to Canada, we stopped at the supermarket to stock up on some cheap booze ($5 for a nice bottle of wine anyone? $7 for a 6-pack of beer?) and toiletries (sunscreen that is $17 in Canada was going for $8 in the US). Next stop was 4 nights of relaxation in Osoyoos, British Columbia.

Welcome to Libby ... this one is for my dear friend Libby (we were, however, disappointed to find that the town of Libby is an asbestos riddled s**t hole) |
