Calgary Stampeders vs Edmonton Eskimos ...

Getting ready to kick a 1 point goal

On Sunday, I had my first Canadian football experience.  It will probably be my last.  The atmosphere was exciting with fireworks, music, cheerleaders and a passionate crowd.  But the game itself ... it is difficult to follow and is so 'stop-start'.  It was fascinating to watch the players - so many specialised positions and with those special jobs, highly specialised body types - there were some big guys and not necessarily big in the muscly way.  There were also small wiry guys who easily wove their way through the opposition in their bid for a touch down.  The crowd were equally as interesting - very civilised compared to an AFL crowd.  In the end, Calgary thrashed Edmonton, much to the disgust of my Edmonton supporting companions.  The final verdict?  Canadian football has nothing on AFL - give me muscly men in short shorts playing a skillful game any day.
