Whitefish ...

A lesson we learnt on our trip was that if a place name has the word 'falls' in it, it doesn't necessarily mean that there are any beautiful waterfalls nearby.  For our time in Montana, I chose the town of Columbia Falls to stay in.  I'm not really sure why except for the fact that it was close to Glacier NP and I figured that there might be some nice waterfalls nearby.  There weren't any falls and it wasn't very nice at all.  But, despite our initial disappointment at the surrounds, our motel was lovely and we had a wonderful time exploring the nearby and far more pleasant town of Whitefish.

Hot hiking

It was very hot while we where in Montana (high 30s plus humid) so we kept our activity to a minimum.  After asking the tourist bureau about dog friendly activities, we found ourselves driving to Lion Mountain State Park, where we did a mini-hike for an hour or so, stopping for frequent rest breaks in the shade.

To cool ourselves off after the hot walk, we headed to the edge of Whitefish Lake where we found a lovely dog beach.  Here, Abbey learnt how to swim and we regretted leaving our bathers at the motel.  But, as we paddled and Abbey swam, the water was cool and refreshing in the hot, hot weather.

We also spent some time in the actual town of Whitefish, where we browsed the lovely stores and propped ourselves at a local cafe for a spot of people watching.

So, despite the lesson learnt about choosing motel locations, we had a wonderful time exploring the area around Columbia Falls and Whitefish!
