Danger! Rutting Season ...

Female elk plays in the water

This was the warning we were given in Jasper.  It was mating season for the elks and they were out on the town, strutting their stuff and generally behaving like sex-crazed teenagers.  As we drove into Jasper, we stopped to watch a herd of elk flirt alongside the river.  We watched as the herd moved on and a lone female was left frolicking in the water.  As she realised that she had been left alone, she leapt out of the water and continued down the river bank, bleating flirtatiously to the males up ahead.

Check out how big he is!

This exciting event that marked our entrance to Jasper motivated us to continue driving up towards Maligne Lake, where it had been suggested that there was plenty of wildlife (Read: We wanted to see a bear!).  Unfortunately, there were no bears to be seen, however we were lucky enough to see a wolf.

On our trip through the Rockies, we also saw some big horned sheep as well as the elusive mountain goat.  Who needs to go to Africa for safari when you can watch frisky elk playing in their natural habitat?!
