Australian construction workers are known for their extended 'smoko' breaks and early knock off times. Not so with Canadian construction workers. They take their jobs very seriously. Currently, the road we live on is in the process of being paved with tarmac (you know you live in the country when you live on a dirt road). Unfortunately, this means that it takes a long time to get out onto the highway. The construction workers here don't just spin their sign from 'Stop' to 'Slow'. No, they give you a very detailed account of what to expect ahead - how many dump trucks there are, which side of the road to drive on, how many workers are hanging around etc. It seems to be very complicated procedure. I mentioned this to the buck-toothed female worker yesterday (when she finished giving a detailed description of my car to the worker at the other end) and all I got was a serious nod in agreement that yes, it was a very complicated job. Perhaps Australian construction workers could learn something from this? But in the meantime, can't they just trust that we can see the dump trucks and people for ourselves and have the good sense to drive slowly past them. Just take a 'smoko' break for goodness sake.
